How Invisalign® Works

Before beginning any dental work, Dr. Mulliken will meet with you to determine whether you are a good candidate for the treatment. If Invisalign® is right for you, the procedure will proceed as follows:

An impression will be taken of your teeth
Dr. Mulliken will establish a treatment plan to best reach your goals
A series of clear aligners will be customized for your smile
The aligners, worn in succession, will gradually shift your teeth into position

Once your custom aligners arrive, Dr. Mulliken will indicate how long to wear your first aligner, usually for six months or so, before switching to the next aligner in the series. As you change aligners, your teeth will gradually shift into the correct position. Though the aligners are removable, Dr. Mulliken recommends wearing the Invisalign® trays as often as possible, up to 22 hours a day, for optimal results. The number of trays needed and the length of time for the entire treatment will depend on the severity of your case. The aligners are clear, plastic, and removable, allowing for a comfortable and smooth process.

Invisalign® Candidates

During your initial consultation, Dr. Mulliken will determine whether Invisalign® is right for your specific needs. Virtually anyone, from teens to adults, who wants to correct minor to severe tooth misalignment, without the annoyance of metal braces, is a candidate for Invisalign®. Candidates should have the ability to commit to wearing the aligners for 22 to 24 hours a day, and seeing the treatment through to the end. It is also recommended that you do not smoke during the treatment, so trays do not turn yellow.

Risks or Side Effects of Invisalign®

There are no risks or side effects associated with the Invisalign® treatment. In fact, any of the side effects caused by traditional braces are not a problem with Invisalign®. For example, patients do not experience pain after each dentist visit, as they normally do with traditional metal braces, as the dentist does not tighten any wires. The movement of the teeth is gradual with Invisalign®, and though patients may experience slight discomfort as the teeth shift, it is very minor.
